Audi Automobile Works started in Germany in 1910. Like a lot of other car companies, they didn't do too well during the Great Depression (which even hit car sales in cities like Dallas.) The company struggled through various changes of ownership, and the Audi brand ended up being passed to Volkswagen in 1964. Not much exciting happened with the brand until 1980 when they introduced the Dallas quattro, the world's first all-wheel drive car. What previously had only been available in trucks, was put into a sporty model by Audi.
The Quattro became a quick success in Dallas and everywhere else in the United States. The original Quattro Coupe isn't available, but the name was kept to describe Audi's unique all-wheel drive system (which has since been copied by many other car companies trying to keep up.) Audi separated itself from the automotive pack in other ways as well, including using aluminum more than other car manufacturers and also their attention to interior design.
While the outside of an Audi looks okay, it's not until you experience the interior of an Audi that you realize why the brand is still so popular today in cities like Dallas. The body, engine and suspension of Audi vehicles is nothing to shake a stick at, but their finely crafted interiors are what separate them and push them over the top for some enthusiasts.
