The history of the Mini doesn't begin until 1959, but in the short time since then, the Mini (especially the Mini Cooper) has become one of the most recognizable cars around the world, even in a city like Dallas. The first Mini was created by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) to fill a need for a small, economical car to help with the effects of the gas crisis in England at the time. The Mini fit the bill perfectly, making it a quick success. It didn't get the Mini moniker until 1961, but people didn't care much what it was called at that point. They just loved that it got great gas mileage.
The 1960s were definitely the decade of the Mini. From the Mini Cooper to the Mini Truck to the Mini Moke (a cross of a Mini and a Jeep) to the mini skirt, the 60s were truly the mini decade. The car was banned in the United States in 1968 because of emissions. The Mini was still popular all over the world, though. It wasn't until the brand was bought by BMW group in 1994 that things began to change. It wasn't until 2002 that the Mini Cooper made it back to America's shores, but it made a big comeback. (They were even popular in cities like Dallas.)
The new, modern Mini Cooper has been a great success, making it hard to purchase one. There are Mini Coopers in Dallas and all over, though, so people are waiting for them. There's just something about the adorable 'mini' car that makes it a favorite of people from all walks of life.
